Supporting Growth in Our Community

12/02/2010
Since the 2009 Budget we have invested nearly a billion dollars in upgrading our infrastructure  in Ottawa. These investments have been spread across several sectors, impacting all areas of our community.

Affordable Housing

Under the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, we have already invested $25 million in affordable housing projects. These projects include:

  • $2.15 million to build 42 new supportive housing units for homeless women in partnership with Cornerstone
  • $18.3 million to build 248 new units at Beaver Barracks in partnership with the Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation
  • $6 million for a 55-unit project with the Shepherds of Good Hope
In addition, we announced an investment of $6.5 million in November to provide 40 affordable housing units to Aboriginal households living off reserve in Ottawa. The program is in partnership with the Gignul Non-Profit Housing Corporation and the Tungasuvvingat Inuit project.

Public Transit and Infrastructure

We have invested over half a billion in infrastructure projects across Ottawa in the last year.  Highlights include:

  • An historic investment of $600 million for rapid public transit
  • $125,000 to support the building of the Chinatown Gateway
  • $3 million to renovate libraries throughout the city
  • Over $63 million for roads and bridges
Recreation

To help encourage an active lifestyle, we have invested $24 million to upgrade and expand recreation facilities such as:

  • $3 million to renovate the Metro Central YMCA/YWCA
  • $400,000 to retrofit the Hintonburgh Community Centre basement
  • $594,000 to expand the Rideau Canoe Club
Post-Secondary Education

Knowledge is the key to success, and that is why we are investing $158.5 million to repair and build new infrastructure on our university and college campuses:

  • $52.5 million for Carleton University to build two new buildings
  • $80 million for the University of Ottawa received $80 million to renovate and add a tower to Vanier Hall
  • $26 million for La Cité collègiale  to build a new home for the 911 Institute
  • $35 million for Agonquin College  to build a new Environmental Demonstration Centre
Non-Profit Organizations

We have invested over $5 million to support the amazing work being done by non-profit organizations in our community, such as:

  • $3 million to Interval House to build a new womens' shelter
  • $514,000 for the Good Companions Centre renovations
  • $1.7 million to build the Wellspring Ottawa: Cancer Survivorship Centre
  • $533,334 for the Youth Services Bureau ugrades
  • $4.6 million to build the Wabano Cultural and Community Centre
These investments are important for our community. They are creating jobs and generating demand for materials. They are strengthening our physical spaces, allowing us to build stronger, more reliable and efficient systems to move people and goods. Most importantly, these investments are building up our people and creating spaces to succeed.
