Sports Volunteers Honoured in Ottawa Centre Celebration 2010 Recognizes Sports Heroes
Our sports heroes: the Celebration 2010 winners in Ottawa Centre.
On January 30, I was honoured to be joined by over 150 guests as we honoured very special sports heroes in our community.

Launched last year, Celebration 2010: Community Sports Hero Award Program aims to recognize and honour the “unsung heroes” of community sport and recreation: coaches, association members, trainers, conveners, fundraisers, drivers, chaperones, etc, in the spirit of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Organizations and individuals from across the city sent in nominations of exception individuals who have started community skating rinks, coached Little League baseball, and founded sports programs for disabled children.

I put out a call for nominations last fall and was overwhelmed with the response I received. In the New Year, I formed a Selection Committee with Patricia Parulekar, Mary Tsai-Davies and Tony Pacheco and we narrowed the nominations down to 26 winners.

On the 30th, we were thrilled to honour the following sports heroes:

Lorne Abugov
Charles Bain
Lorne Cutler
John Dance
Maria Hunter
Wade Farquharson
Ron Heacock
Kim Hodges
Sue Holloway
Peter Lefebvre
Donna Makin
Phil Marsh
Kate McCarthy
Geordie McConnell
Bruce Meredith
Louis Monvoisin
Mary Peters
The Plant Pool Association
Wayne Rodney
Rod Sabourin
Bob Scaini
Dan Shields
Patricia Smith
Imran Syed
Roger Taylor
Derek Wilson

These volunteers are the backbone of community sports and recreation in Ontario and contribute immeasurably to the development and experience of athletes of all ages and levels of competitiveness.

Thank you to all our nominees for making our community a healthier, more fun place for everyone to be!
